Raspberry ketone (RK) is an aromatic compound found in red raspberries.

Its molecular structure is similar to capsaicin and synephrine, which are also thermogenic. However, instead of getting its actions through agonizing beta receptors (like capsaicin), RK causes HSL (hormone-sensitive lipase) to translocate to within the fat cell. HSL is the enzyme that, once inside the fat cell, slices apart fat molecules into various fatty acids in preparation for fat metabolism. Furthermore, this particular activity is the rate-limiting step in lipolysis within the cell. This means that you cannot have maximum lipolysis without ample supplies of HSL inside the fat cell.

RK has no documented side effects related to consumption and may even be more thermogenic than capsaicin. Due to the similarity in structure of RK to capsaicin and synephrine, scientific research to test the fat-loss effects of RK was done. Research clearly showed that RK prevented the onset of obesity in mice even when the animals were on a high-fat diet. RK also prevented an increase in blood triglyceride following a high-fat meal. That means that RK not only prevented the onset of obesity, but it also prevented the storage of fat. When rats were overfed fructose, a simple sugar linked to the current obesity epidemic, RK prevented fat synthesis. RK’s fat loss effects come from their ability to enhance norepineprine-induced fat loss by promoting the relocation of HSL from the cytosol of cells directly to fat deposits.
