Bench,Squat,Deadlift, barbell military press,Weighted Chinup,Dips (any version bench or parralel bars).

Overated:
Anything using a cable, DECLINE BARBELL PRESS I mean its probably a fair exercise but every man and his dog in the world does them(cept me),preacher curls(seem to be done by the same people every day of the week) and Jay Cutler

I still use cables occasionally but the ammount of people that come in and do like a cable curl followed by a rope tricep pushdown and then a cable crossover then off to the preacher curl and finish with a decline press(or in another order) astounds me and so i think they are overated. :P maybe its just the gym i train at and if i focus on any gym ive trained at, leg training of any form is underated. 20 people will fight for the preacher bench or decline bench at any time but the squat rack or leg press even extensions or leg curls are always free. lol

Over-rated....

Leg Extension machine.

If I had my way, Id ban this machine from gyms.

Because its just plain bad for the knee joint with the shear forces it places on the patella.

Other than that. Basically any exercises which stresses on the dysfunctional movement of the human body.

They hardly translate to increases in real strength where the body needs it for daily or foreseable usage.

Under rated....

Any funtional movements, how the body intended....

Chins ups and bent over dumbbell rows (two handed). Great range of motion for the lats, and hitting the rhomboids and middle back nicely, combined with unilateral training yet nobody ever ever ever ever ever does them.

The only unilateral back exercise I see people do is one armed dumbbell rows kneeling on a bench, which I think is possibly over-rated.

After my knee reconstruction there was a list I found of when it was appropriate to include certain activities back into your training. The leg extension was last, well after every other gym exercise, after most sport activities, and just before skiing.

man a lot of you guys just call certain exercises "over-rated" casue you see lots of idiots doing them incorrectly or cause there is a line up for them in the gym.

How can anyone call deadlifts or squats overated???
If you could only do two exercises in the world, these would be the two to pick.

well .. i can't include Squat , Deadz as under rated exersices .. from many artiles i've read them .. all scnitific research prove that these two exersices should be a core training for any athlete .. and i'm really own for the deadlift .. the strength that i gained from it was insane .. it helps me lift more weights and make my lower back handle the stress of the weights on many exersices .. Deadz is the king .. and not to forget the squat .. once u did it properly ur gonna have great improvments in ur legs .. so it's really shame to include them in overrated exersices

Anyone who thinks Smyth Squats are bad can kiss it. One of the greatest exercises ever. Go as hard as you want with all protection in the world.

Amen. Calling squats overrated is absurd. No other single exercise will put more mass on you. And for you women out there, squats are the single exercise you need to do :)

I would say there is only one excercise that fits in here. PULL UPS are much underrated, they are the best back exercise to do. All this stuff is how a given person will respond to different lifts so its hard to say thing are overrated.

He does 600-700 lb. squats easy. BUT HE'S BEEN TRAINING FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS!! Just watch a video of his squats. All the way down, all the way up.

haven't read through all the posts fully, but i had to comment on this.

how can an exercise be over rated if it isn't performed correctly? Back squats are the best exercise for you AS LONG AS you know how to do them. no other movement (besides clean and jerk) works a broad range of muscle groups giving you greater power.

To me, i'd think back squats are under rated only because people don't know the correct form.

i think everyone here can bash any time of lift or workout or exercise. just because it doesnt work for them not because theyre over hyped or underhyped but because it didnt suit there body type well so this makes no sense at all everyone has a negative reaction to some workout while the guy down the road loves it cause it helped him get big.

I think performance may be a problem some times, but for some people I believe genetics or muscle insertion makes some exercises more effective for them and others less effective for them.

Just for an example, I don't get anything at all from concentration curls or hammer curls, but I get an incredible pump from incline curls.

Underrated: Bent-over barbell rows, Weighted dips for chest, Walking Lunges. Squats. Deads.

I really don't think many things are OVER-rated. One person may hate squats and deads, but maybe he has a bad low back. Another guy may hate straight barbell curls because it hurts his wrists or elbows, while another guy fawns over them... to each his own.

Overratted/underratted is largely a matter of opinion and personal experience. For me that has meant things like BB bench press and straight bar curls have been overratted while things like glute ham raises have been underratted.

I think I'm going to start a front squat fraternity at my gym. I seem to be the only one as well that does this at my gym (well I guess it'll be a small club!). I love the exercise becuase I feel like my quads are totally gassed when I'm done. I must look like I just got the **** kicked out of me when I'm done by the looks on everyone faces! I'll hardly be able to walk tomorrow!

cable crosses and hammer strengths along with the other workouts like bench press and rows and such are definitely going to help. they are nowhere near overrated.
