how do you guys hold the bar when you bench, i.e. is your thumb wrapped around it like when you hold a bat or something, or is it on the outside lined up with all your other fingers?

I got my thumb wrapped around the bar. I'm too scared the bar will fall on me if I do it thumbless.

when you dont wrap your thumb around the bar it takes a lot of strain off of your wrists. usually people "feel" it better in thier chest and triceps when they do this. if you decide to do this, you have to keep your elbows tucked in, b/c if you dont you will roll your wrists and the weight will roll out of your hands. i wrap my thumbs around just b/c its safer.

if the bar slips out of ur hands, it has one place to go and thats on your chest. ive never heard that it minimizes the load on the front delt but im no expert here. i think that website had the red X just b/c it can be so dangerous. im sure you've seen powerlifters benching and it lands on their chest, thats b/c they dont have their thumbs wrapped around.

I use the thumb with all my fingers - but as for keeping your elbows tucked in, surely you can't get as good a stretch on the pec like that and it becomes more of a tricep exercise?

Thumb on heavy on free weights for safety. Thumbless on machines and on light on free weights for a better workout of the target muscle.
