Should abs be trained regularly in the off season? It's my impression that they should not be, but i'm relativley new to the sport so tell me what you think.

I think they should be trained all year round. They are like any other muscle in your body. im sure your gona get a lot of different opinions on this one. I think it should be done year around b/c you need a solid core to get good gains in squat and deadlift. Abs play a big roll in squats. if you do not train abs, your lower back may start to not feel so hot when doing squats. i know this from experience.

I agree completely Diesel. :iagree: Your abs are not only for aesthetics. Your core(meaning abs and low back) is where much of your power, strength and stability come from. Regardless of whether or not you have a nice winter coat covering them I feel that they should be trained 2 or 3 times a week, maybe 4-6 sets each session to avoid injury and to increase core strength.

I never train abs... dont need to.. to have a 6 pack its all about diet.. not about crunches.. but some people choose to train them.. i find that my abs are always working no matter what exercise im doing.

serbmarko, you're right that a low% bf is the most important thing for having visible abs. But training them makes them simply a bit bigger, simple as that. Ansd you train your abs basicly from doing squats/deadlifts, but if you train them separately they actully will improve your compounds.
Well I got a questions myself about training abs. Should you train your obligues? I've heard that training them is in contrast with the Y shape and make your waste look wider. What you guys think?

i think the only time you should train obliques is when cutting. but, keep the reps high. you dont really want to make the muscle bigger, just tighter.
