......when doing heavy benches, in the 2-3 reps region, is it okay to use a smith machine wit locks. Im askin dis becoz i do not hav a training partner to spot me. I kno i can js ask sum1 to cum n spot me, but r smith machines js as useful for strength?
are they useful? yes, just as? in some aspects no. You can't substitute for free weights. I mean you'll come to realize if you can do XXX amout of weight on the smitch machine it won't translate to regular bench because it is a slightly different movement due to your form not being restricted to a 1 dimensional plane.

Yea i agree. Another thing, just b/c you dont have a spot doesnt mean youll be fine on the smith machine. Ive seen people get themselves in trouble on those before. So either way, get someone to spot you.

^^^I've never had to concentrate that much to read a simple paragraph. How about we type w/ actual words
The spot is usualy a more psychological thing anyway. Let's say you're benching 500lbs. You fail and the bar is falling. What's your spot gonna do, curl it up?
I know what you mean but things can happen. Just because you know you can do a weight for a certain amount of reps easily doesnt mean you wont pull something or tear something. Im not the type of person where I think you need a spot of every single workout known to man. For me the only lifts I use a spot are squat, seated military press, all bench presses doen w/ BB's and leg presses on the sled. I agree that its ridiculous when I see these guys doing DB bench and they have someone spot them. I just think safety should come first over everything.
Meh, like I said, I don't usualy need spots. Only ocasionaly, like on my last set and I realy wanna go beyond failure, then I ask someone and they'll know I mean business.
Why is it ridiculous? Maybe those people are going heavy on DBs and want to push it till failure... Sometimes its good to do forced reps.
Yea i know what you mean, but I just think YOU get the weight or YOU dont. Even when im doing flat bench w/ BB and someone is spotting me; I will go to failure but as soon as my spotter has to help me im done. Its just the way I train I guess.

My buddy tore his pec last week, doing 460,, the spot didnt do shit for him,, i mean he tried but he couldnt
