I have a question regarding front squats.
I went pretty heavy on my front squats yesterday and i woke up with obviously quad and hamstrings DOMS but wasnt expecting my back to be sore as well. So my question is do they work your back as well as your legs.

sure, keeping your back straight and good posture throughout makes you use the back muscles to stabilize the weight esp if its heavy

^ Right. With front squats it is very important to remain as upright as possible b/c of where weight sits. For example, when I do front squats I use the clean grip and I constantly tell myself to keep my elbows high - especially at the bottom of the movement where there is a tendency to lean forward which allows your back to round.

Front squats are great for the quads, but also for the core. Great movement.

Front squats can be pretty core intensive. I like to use a belt if my back isn't feeling 100% and I'm going heavy.

I used to do front squats with the cross arm hold, but since I have switched to the clean grip, I have noticed it is much easier to stay upright. It's a little hard on the wrists at first if you aren't used to it, but just make sure you stretch and it won't hurt after a couple more times.

Clean grip takes some getting used to - as it does put allot pressure on the wrists and forearms, but once you become accustomed to the stretch, I feel its superior to crossing your arms.. just my opinion..

I too set it on my front delts using crossed arms. Easier to control. Did the clean grip in high school cause that's how the football coach taught me but after seeing alot of pros doing the cross arm (NEVER seen anyone do clean grip) I tried it and it feels alot better. I work up to 315 for reps on the front squat and feel with this much weight the crossarmed grip is superior in controlling the weight IMO.

Just please tell me none of you use the "pu ssy" pad!!!

I think it's impossible to use the pad, the bar already almost chokes you out enough as it is.

Also, if you want to know about superior control, check out 200lb Olympic lifters holding 400lbs snatch grip. It's not like you really even have to hold on to the bar, it should be locked in behind your delts as long as you have your arms up. I'm not condoning that, but I'm just saying, that's how it should be resting.

^Yeah I meant on squats in general concerning the pad. It's all a matter of personal preference on the grip. One isn't better then the other just maybe easier doing it one way. I'll have to try the snatch grip tomorrow I'm doing legs. See how that goes

The front snatch position doesn't have to be a full grip; something I should have mentioned earlier. You are allowed to have you pinkies free, and even your thumbs if you are inflexible.

I've been doing these lately--just wanted some variety and to give myself a break from back squats.

Front squats hit my quads and abs much harder than back squats. And I don't feel them much in my hamstrings, so I ad deadlift to the mix.

Agree about the back. This exercise is one reason why I started doing more deadlifts. My back was the limiting factor, not my legs. Once I hit deads hard for severa months, front squats became a lot less stressful on my back, which allowed my legs to get a better workout.

Ya the main reason i do this exercise is because it has so much carry over to my squat and deadlift power.

like cancer? lulz

I'm 6'1, I experimented with squatting deep and going to just about parallel, and found that going to parallel did more of an impact than a2g, at least for me

^Yeah height shouldnt mean much on excuses for squat power unless your like 6'10. lol. I'm 6'1 as well and squat 135, 225, 315, 365, 405 for reps for my sets and I go A2G or it don't count. It's all mental. 20 years ago the bench record was 500pds. Then someone broke it at 550 and a month later it was 600. The point being when people knew that more could be done they did more. It's all mental on the squat in the same respect. Most psych themselves out before they even get under the bar

true, true lol.

I'm not really making excuses, I know my squat sucks and I'll be the first to admit it. But that's what thinking I don't need squats in order to get big will do to you.

And you're just a big boy lol
