It's all mental on the squat in the same respect. Most psych themselves out before they even get under the bar
I agree, I was squatting 385 for my max weight for a couple weeks bc I didnt think I could go any higher. I decided to put 410 on my bb, got under it and pushed out 8 reps. Our minds can be our biggest limiting factor. I dont really like to go that heavy without a lifting partner though, you just never know what can happen

Your alot like me bro, I have no problem admitting what I suck at either, then you work on it. For me its shoulders and biceps

any tips on getting width to quads? my legs used to be huge when i played football and basketball alot, so i think its the lack of cutting and sideways movement which made the outer quads smaller. any suggestions to bring them up??

Who knows man everybody is different? For me squats have always worked. Recently started to do hack squats and the legs are reacting pretty good (wider hitting that outer sweep). I'm going start doing HEAVY leg extentsions again haven't done em in awhile thoser are great for quad mass for me at least. Do whatever has always worked best

ya ive started doing lateral jumps to try and duplicate football movements. i dont really have time to go to a field and do cutting drills, or play basketball. on a pretty tight schedule right now.

I agree with TheBiggest. I remember Zir saying that wide squats incorporate the "tear drop" more, as it's your body's attempt to pull the legs closer, where as the "sweep" does the opposite.

so narrower hits outside more? doesn't this go for calves as well? like if you point your toes inwards it's going to work the outside of the calf more? I always get confused with that

Individual body mechanics will also affect how strong you are in squats (and all other lifts).

Relatively short femurs will give you a mechanical advantage, an long femurs do just the opposite.

Body mechanics/leverages make a big difference.

The direction you point the toes on calf exercises makes very little difference.

Bent legged movements tend to hit the outer part more, straight-legged movements hit the inside more.

Id disagree with that because at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine confirms that pointing your toes inward and outward significantly makes a difference. Id try to find a link but it would take a long time.

I would love to read it if you can find it. My older brother had Arnold's Encylcopedia of Bodybuilding, and I remember reading about that in there, but I can't find the book anymore.

I didn't find the specific study i was referring to but i did find another. Toe pointing during calf raise? | Fitness Uncovered Blog
Second paragraph
"Research was carried out by Dr. Per Tesch which attempted to find out if the change of toe position during the calf raise had any impact on the stimulation to either of the two gastrocnemius heads. The results did support the view point of interchanging feet positions, but this was only shown when the toes were pointing outwards. Pointing the toes outwards caused a greater amount of stimulation to the inner medial head of the gastrocnemius, however the same could not be said when pointing the toes inwards. When performing the calf raise with the toes pointing inwards there was equal stimulation to both the lateral and medial head of the gastrocnemius, dismissing one half of the argument for changing feet positions"

Meh i won't get hyper-technical you can argue all day if pointing toes shifts the emphasis but i no when i switch foot positions i feel it in the different part of my calf head so im going to stick with that. But i rarely do calves anymore because there isnt a calf raise round at my meet hahaha.

matthew matthew matthew, I wasn't arguing you silly goose. Just posting up some links. However I do wish I had some rockin wicked calves. I personally think it's the most impressive when someone has awesome calves or quads.

Well crap...I can't remember all the posts I wanted to reply to...

Height: I'm 6'2". I was stuck on squating 300 for YEARS. I couldn't get past it. Then I changed things up. For my 5x5's I started using a wider stance (almost sumo stance) and only went parallel. For my 5x15's I used a regular stance (more narrow that what I was doing before) and went A2G. I find that I can't go A2G unless I narrow up my stance. Now I'm pushing more weight.

How to make your quads grow? Heavy leg extensions really added some mass onto my lower, inner quads. Still working on the rest.

Toe placement: I did toes in and toes out for years. Toes out certainly puts the stress on the inner calf. Toes in is somewhat pointless IMO because the position naturally trys to straighten out the angle and ultimately brings the feet placement back to "near" straight. But I certainly don't have the answer to calves since those stupid things will not grow as much as everything else.

Hmm, Famine, you bring up some good points. I generally have a wider stance on my squats. I will try doing a narrow stance and A2G. So obviously you go lighter weight with the narrower stance since you're doing more hypertrophy than anything right?

Yes, for sure. My 5x5 weight is about 150% my 5x15 weight.

I know you're a big advocate of Layne's routine. I definately got some strength in my legs, but not much size from the 5x5
