I have started doing lots of preacher movements lately and i really like them, but im paranoid these will build up my lower bi's more then my whole bicep because of the angle your arm is at sticking out so far. will i still work the entire bicep muscle and get a full contraction doing a preacher the same as i would anything else like a standing bb curl? call me paranoid but i would like to settle this once and for all because a dumbass at my school says they suck because they only build up the lower bicep and give you weird looking bi's

How do I start this.. oh yeah..Keep the preachers in there

Add:

1.) Standing Barbell curls ( for overall mass)

2.)Preacher curls.

3.) Incline dbell curls.

Now there are tons and I mean tons of different curling excersizes..

Supersets, Drop sets.. Hammer curls. Standing alternating curls.. just to name a few..

They are hit the bicep in different areas.. Oh---I didn't even mention Machine curls..oh my god.. Dont get me started.. umm cable machines to..

Moral of the story,,mix & match.. find out what fatigues them the most. Remember your tearing down or breaking the muscle when you workout.. Your rebuilding/repairing when your at rest.

Eat and Recover

nicely done chris. very well put, but to answer your question Larry Scott, the very first Mr. Olympia,(1965 - 66), is credited with having invented the Preacher Bench, hence it is often referred to as the Scott Curl Bench. Larry Scott had incredible biceps, even by today's standards - they were as big as softballs and ran full length from his shoulder well down into his elbow. If one could mold a perfect biceps any way they wanted to - huge, thick, and perfectly shaped - they would mold an exact replica of Larry Scott's biceps. Larry credited his amazing biceps development to the use of the Preacher Curl Bench and he trained his biceps exclusively on this apparatus. Larry did three different types of curls on the Preacher bench - barbell curls, dumbbell curls, and reverse barbell curls - and one can hardly argue with the results that he obtained. Larry, at his peak, would use a PAIR of 80 lbs. dumbbells on the Preacher Bench for a strict set of several repetitions! If you have never done this exercise before, try taking half that weight, an 80 lb. barbell, and doing a strict set of ten on the Preacher Bench and you will appreciate the power that Larry Scott had developed with this exercise.

the preacher curl will work the entire length of the bicep muscle as long as you put the squeeze at the top of the movement. good luck and stay after it.

Good posts

Its impossible to isolate one part/section/area/head of the bicep in any excercise. Just mix up your routine and you'll be fine

I love preacher curls but they make the tendentious in my elbow flare up more then most other exercises. Sometimes I have to stop half way through them.

I'm just wondering what you guys suggest (i use the standing, preacher, incline) as stated prior in that order...the question is heavy 1st on the standing and progress to the isolations or iso heavy 1st and then to the standing?

usually do your heavy "mass" builder sets in the beginning exercises and save the concentration sets (iso) movements that you use less weight on for the end,

I think the important thing to note here is that there is no "lower" bicep. It's all one muscle.

The term biceps brachii is a Latin phrase meaning "two-headed [muscle] of the arm", in reference to the fact that the muscle consists of two bundles of muscle, each with its own origin, sharing a common insertion point near the elbow joint.

I'm missing something, I still don't see upper and lower. If anything, I see left and right.

i dont understand is there still an upper and lower chest? is the muscle just built differently that these areas can be targeted unlike a bicep?

There's two parts to it. Not saying upper or lower but there's tow parts. There's ways to make every muscle grow in different directions especially if there's more then one part to it.

But then that leads to Spooner's question, what about the chest? The fact that the bicep fibers run from shoulder to elbow, leaves out upper and lower sections. Like the pec fibers run from shoulder to sternum, leaving out the option of inner and outer. And Gringo I'm not trying to argue, I have a basic knowledge of muscle anatomy, and these are questions I have.

follow this link and you can see what gringo is talking about, yes there are 2 parts, and actually a third but that is part of the fore arm just below the brachii, called the Pronator Teres ,
the 2 muscles of the bicep muscles are
Biceps Brachii<the long head, the biggest part of the bicep muscle
Brachialis< the outer or anterior part of the muscle

And Gringo I'm not trying to argue, I have a basic knowledge of muscle anatomy, and these are questions I have.
as for the chest there are 2 major muscles you have, called the Pectoralis Major, and the Pectoralis Minor, which lies under the major,

Ok so basically... what I said earlier was right. The bicep is all one muscle. It might have 2 insertion points, but that doesn't mean it's split. Also the brachialis is not part of the bicep. It might have a similiar function, and work in close proximity to the bicep, but it's not joined.

So I stick with my original statement. Now my question is, Gringo, was your post to correct me, or just for informational use for the OP?

no your still missing it, click on the pic for a enlarged view.
Your bicep muscle (shown on the diagram in green)muscle_man.gif is responsible for moving your hand towards your shoulder. The bicep muscle actually consists of 3 muscles.
Quote:
They are the biceps brachii (main bicep muscle), brachialis (the outside bicep muscle) and brachioradialis (the connector muscle between the main bicep and the forearm muscle).
Most of the bicep muscle exercises will hit all 3 of the bicep muscles. Some bicep exercises will hit some areas of the bicep muscle harder than others. For exmaple, the reverse barbell curl will hit the brachioradialis much harder than the other 2 muscles.

Some good stuff here, but I have a question that hasn't been answered:

Is there a difference from doing ez-curl BB preacher curls, to straight BB preacher curls? I would assume the ez-curl works more of the inside of the bicep, whereas the straight bar would give more of an overall workout? I've tried doing them both and i'm wondering if i should just cut one out or not.

Good post mike!

And Picabloo by switching the way you hold a bar or how close or far apart you hold it or even how high you raise or lower it all controlls different muscles. Next time you so straight bar curls use a pre loaded bar hold it shoulder width, stand straight up and bend forward a few inches. Don't rock back or forward but see hoe much harder it is to do it that way compared to standing straight up or rocking backwards.
