Is there any benefits of the variety of pulldowns .. ( front - behind the neck - close grip under hand - neutral grip ) ?

I always performed wide grip pulldowns but never got big lats... So after watching Dorian Blood & Guts I thought, maybe I should try close grip underhand with a EZ bar. And since I've been doing them my lats are fuller and bigger. My favorite lat exercise next to straight arm pulldowns.

Fahad is right with this, I also notice is hit mostly my rear and medial delts as well as upper traps while doing it behind the neck, and I can't get a really good contraction like that, I'm trying not to do anything behind my neck or body anymore cuz I fucked up my neck really bad doing shit like that. It could work for you but I think it's too risky. I really don't like lat pulldowns anymore I just do chin-ups in it's place if I opt to do them on a back day, I gives a better workout in my opinion. As for using a close grip, I'm pretty sure the closer you go in the more biceps it's actually hitting than back. I'm not sure, but I believe if it makes no difference between overhand or underhand grip, just exeriment w/ what works best for your body type and you'll be happy. Don't worry about how others train. Good Luck q80

I have always avoided doing pulldowns behind the neck. It feels unnatural and also puts a strain on the rotartor cuff. Reverse grip pulldowns are a fav of mine and I feel they fill out the lower latts and allow you to squeez them alot more.

I agree with staybig, pullups are king in a wide back.

I love pull ups. I alternate close grip and wide grip pull ups per workout, along with close grip/wide grip pull downs. (wide grip pull ups with close grip pull downs, or opposite) the wide grips I feel in my upper lats for sure, and the close grip always leave me sore at the bottom.

you should pick the variety that allows you to use the most weight.
for most people this is a parallel grip pullup or supenated grip pullup,
Fuck the pulldowns.

I agree with Jumk in a way. I really don't like doing pulldowns anymore cause your doing more when you do chin-ups. I also feel it hit my medial delts more when I'm doing chin-ups. If you don't have a weight machine to help you with chins, then try putting a stool under the chin-up bar, and use a little of your body weight to help. That's my version of doing it at home cuz I don't go to the gym, too many people waste my fucking time. I have dumbbells that go up to 240lbs. in my house. No fucking joke. Ronnie aint got shit on me. (No I can't lift 240, my max is 120lb. on bench, but I have them for when I know I'm gonna get bigger.)
