Switching it up like that is key. What works for me is going heavier with barbell and lighter with dumbbell. It's harder to keep form when you go heavy on DBs because there's a larger ROM (range of motion) so I try to keep it at the weight that my form isn't effected. Living heavy isn't everything; form is everything.
