Well, it really depends on the intensity.
Working chest (bench,dips etc.) twice a week "hard" for a typical 8-12 week period, for a natural trainee, will probably result in diminishing returns. You could easily however have a "heavy" and a "light" day. Kind of like Layne's split of power days (high % 1RM) and hypertrophy days (8-12 reps, high volume, stop 2 reps before failure).
