So I've been thinking about what I'm trying to do and I found that I like moving huge amounts of weight better than just being big. This being the case should I start doing more compound exercises for strength rather then isolating exercises? I'm really not too sure about the difference in training between the two other then the rep counts. If I should be doing compound exercises then what ones should I do that are best for strength?

Thanks.

You can have it all. Muscle. Power. This is the program I used to put on some quality mass and also to prepare myself for my strongman event: Bodybuilding.com - David Knowles - Killer Strength Program!

Good Luck!

You aren't really strong enough to be a powerlifter right now. You might as well just do bodybuilding, because it takes a long time to develop the strength to be a serious powerlifter. You can always switch to powerlifting later on, but right now it makes no difference the exercises you should be doing should be the exact same, whether you call it powerlifting or bodybuilding.

I try to set realistic goals the reason I have those is because that's what my dad was doing at 16 so I'm trying to beat that. Although I think the squat one should be more like 500 now that I think about it. Thanks for the article I'm gonna do something like that and up the sets and lower the reps.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be better to start doing powerlifting earlier than later if that's the thing I wanna do? I'm calling it powerlifting because I wanna lift big weight not necessarily be big like bodybuilders. I'll also be doing different styles of training geared more towards power than size.

You're right on track man. Just stay focused on your mission and don't let anyone or anything stand in your way. This vid always gets me pumped before heading to the gym: YouTube - Deadlift - Andy Bolton X Benedikt

Thanks alot Mercenary, that's a pretty sick video there's one of Andy Bolton deadlifting 1010 I think it said.
Zir Red- Nice post I was laughing at that one.

So for powerlifting I should be doing compound stuff like clean and jerks or whatever they're called? And cut out most isolating exercises?

If you want to check out powerlifting go to metal militia's web site and check out some of the workouts. A lot different than bodybuilding. Below is a few workouts and max effort days.

Here is a few cool videos from one of the gyms I work out at. They only do bench comps there, so I made a little web site for them.

Check out the vid under video clips 2 page titled what not to do with 500 lbs. He wasn't hurt.

Hey, If you want to lift heavier, just make sure you have a spotter and go for it. But whether you do bodybuilding or powerlifting, still bench, squat, row, deadlift, clean and press, pullups, still do all the money exercises. The way I see it either way you'd want to get stronger. At a beginner level I see not much difference between powerlifting training and bodybuilding. Either way I'd stay away from much machine, foo foo 1 muscle isolation, I'd stick with the classic lifts. Good luck, and do what you want!
