Gentlemen,

I've recently started jumping rope to supplement my cardio training. In addition, I'm trying to shed 5-10 pounds for the summer but I hate doing running/sprint training. Does anyone have an insight on how I can effectively shed fat by jumping rope. i.e. how long should I jump for, before vs. after lifting

thanks

rich

Personally I would do it after lifting, with something along the lines of an interval system where you would warm up, then go balls to the wall for 10-30 seconds, then back to an average pace for 50-60 seconds.

warm up with it a bit if u want to before you lift

just do it after with diff variations of how the rope is used and at diff intensities. you'll get better at it over time

What makes you say that, Julio?

Most of the sources I've read consider jump rope to be one of the best cardiovascular exercises you can do.

im not saying jumping rope is a bad idea, it is a great cardiovascular exercise. im just saying you cant substitute jump rope for running or swimming. most people cant jump rope not because they are out of shape but because its a technique you have to learn. when i was out of shape i could jump rope longer than most people that where in shape and could run for miles and miles, that was because i had more technique than them jumping rope. either way what ever works and floats your boat do it because different people got different methods.

It is good to start out with a basic rope, then once you get accustomed and your stamina built up you can go to a weighted rope for even more work. There not the easiest to find but they sure do the trick on the stamina.

i do alot of jumping rope for hockey, try doing 5 sets of 1 minute with about 45 seconds rest between each set, this should have the same effect as a solid 35min cardio session, as far as burning calories goes.

I agree with those who said to do it in an interval fashion, jumprope kicks ass.. you can throw in crossovers and doubles if your looking to spice things up.

I agree with you that the technique can be somewhat limiting on the jump rope. It does take time to learn these things but once you learn how to jump rope effectively, it's great fun AND a great workout.

But you did say
"jump rope is good but its not a substitute for a good cardio session"

Whilst now you are saying it's a great cardiovascular exercise?

Sorry if I'm being annoying

You can do all sorts of cardio with a jump rope.

Spend some time to learn the simple techniques like running on the spot, crossovers etc. before attempting a hard session,be it interval or steady. You'll only end up stopping-starting every few skips and getting annoyed!

Jumping rope will deff get that last 5 - 10 lbs. off. On all of my days except for legs I use the rope between each set. Prob on average of about 30 second intervals but they get shorter as the w/o goes. Best cardio I have done.
