I was wondering something while doing my HIIT session today. I've always gotten this feeling in the right side of my body while sprinting and never really knew what to make of it so I figured I'd turn to the dungeon. Usually after my 5 minutes of walking to warm up and then for about 3 sprints and successive cooldowns, I get this pain in the right side of my body. I have no idea what it feels like to get stabbed, but it feels like a sharp object is being driven in the lower portion of my stomach. On top of that, it feels as if the right artery (I'm pretty sure it'd be the artery and not the vein) on top of my shoulder starts to constrict blood flow. Now I've always attributed this to the amount of second hand smoke I've inhaled from my parents in my lifetime; I figured my right lung has more tar in it. I'm not sure why I figured this but it made logical sense to me at least.

My question is, is this pain from second hand smoke and my body trying to keep enough oxygen going, or is this when my body starts to turn to fat and start to burn it?

It's possible you're having side cramps. I've had it before when I first started running. The best way to avoid it is to make sure you're not leaning too forward or slouching. (runnersworld.com has good info on this)

Hope that helps.

You're cramping. There are a number of reasons this can happen.

You could be dehydrated, which is usually the case. So make sure you hydrate yourself and sip water while you train. Also keep an eye on your electrolytes.

Make sure to drink water throughout the day all day. I used to get this feeling in football alot and tried to drink water steadily all day and it never happened anymore.

I'm dehydrating? Really. I wouldn't have figured since I thought I drank enough water throughout the day. Guess I'll just up what I drink.

Thank you guys I appreciate it. I'll sip on water on my cooldowns time next HIIT session and see what happens.

I take in around 4 bottles of water, 3-4 shakes that contain at least 10 oz of water, and I try to get as much green tea in my system as possible which has ranged from two cups to five.

My next question would be, are you warming up correctly?

This could also lead to cramping.

I think so. I'm not sure. I stretch my calves a bit; I do about 20 calf raises before I wrap my legs up. What else should I be doing?

I would say light jogging and plyometrics before you sprint. zir red can probably give you a much better description of what you need to be doing before hand though.

You should do a 5 minute warmup jog or light cardio activity before any activity imo.

Before I actually start the session I walk on the treadmill for about 5 minutes.
