I suffer from insomnia often, and it is always stress or anxiety related.
First, you need to develop a bed time routine. Just like you probably have a preworkout routine: arrive, contemplate workout, change, ipod and motivational music, warm up, etc., you must develop the same before bed.
Here's mine:
3-4 Hours before bed I put on relaxing classical music.
2 Hours before bed I take 500mg theanine, 2g acetyl-l-carnitine
I turn my computer off 2 hours before I want to fall asleep.
I then watch a relaxing TV program for an hour: animal planet, discovery, etc.
An hour before bed I have 500mg magnesium and 50mg zinc
A little later I'll have a small bed time snack
I'll be in bed reading 45 minutes before I want to fall asleep.
Around the time I want to fall asleep, my eyes are heavy, I turn off the light, and I'm out.
If anything in here dramatically changes, especially if I don't read a non-intensive book (right now I'm reading bioenergetics by alexander lowen) and I just get into bed, my mind goes nuts and sleep doesn't come.
On bad nights I meditate.
I turn off all lights and sound.
I sit but naked in the middle of my room indian style.
I exhale as slow as possible making a "hummmm" noise.
After 10 minutes of this I picture all my problems as clouds.
Then I picture strong wind blowing the clouds away.
When the sky is clear, my mind is clear.
When my mind is clear I remind myself there is nothing. I am nothing. The buddah is not the bodhi tree. The mirror is not withstanding. If there is nothing, how could a speck of dust fall upon in.
Just some suggestions. Learn to relax.
