...you leave the gym, step off the curb, and fall on your ass because your legs are so worn out you can barely walk. Ha!

Squats, hammy curls, leg extensions, hamtractors (ham curl down), leg sled, calve raises...I haven't done legs in two weeks and I am so sore today I thought I'd have to call 911 to come with a crane to help me out of bed this morning...I think it was adding a fourth set to all of my legs yesterday that pushed me into lactic acid paradise.

DOMS...it's what's for breakfast.

I remember a few times just sitting in the leg press seat, drinking 1/2 of my gallon of water, legs felt completely spent, no feeling, no nothing. Terribly weird sensation. I don't do that anymore, but I do go to failure about 80% of my workouts.

I've never had strain on my legs even when doing squatting and leg extensions. I try to concentrate really hard on working just one muscle, going really slow, and failure takes longer to occur [unless I bump up the weight a lot and then the pump comes fast].

What are DOMs, btw?

DOMS = Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. It's how you don't feel sore after you workout but the next day you are achey...from the lactic acid building up in your muscles, or so I've read.

Oh, ok. I get DOMs from every workout but legs. I used to get it from doing adductor and abductor machines but I've injured myself so many times from those things I won't ever do them again. I remember my newb gains during my overtraining months [almost 2 years ago, funny] when I could press the whole stack, that was fun but since then I've cut a lot and I don't know if it's worth going back.

Are there different levels of DOM or just one? I was thinking of pain versus soreness.

NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

COMMON MISCONCEPTION!!!!!!!

DOMS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH LACTIC ACID!!!!

LACTIC ACID CAN BE BUFFERED FOR UP TO AN HOUR AND BACK TO NORMAL WITHIN AN HOUR AFTER A STRENUOUS WORKOUT!

THE DOMS IS CAUSED BY MICROTEARS IF ANYTHING!!

my gym is in a basement and there are like 30 stairs to take down, so when i do my leg workout for me the hard part is to walk up those stairs.

DOMS is caused by microdamage to the cell membrane. This is a direct result from your body adapting to a new, generally higher (overload) stimuli. This is not an indicator of muscle hypertrophy.

The idea of lactic acid build up as a reasoning for DOMS, is outdated, I'm pretty sure.

Zack, what do you mean buffered after a workout?

your body is always buffering lactic acid. Even when ur just sitting there it's buffering the lactic acid. This comes from glycolysis from what I believe, but don't quote me on that. Everything else I'm saying here though I know for a fact is right.

When doing a workout there's a certain point where it can't be buffered anymore and it spikes and sort of overloads.

At this point your muscles are feeling like they are burning. It takes about an hour after exercise for the lactic acid to get back to normal.

Your body is always buffering the lactic acid, but during exercise there's that point where it just can't anymore.

It has nothing to do with DOMS at all.
HUGE misconception there.

Yeah, the stiff leg walks. I got those a lot doing the whole stack on adductor... not any more though.

Shit, I remember when it hurt to walk up stairs, I had to take 1 step up, bring the other leg to that level and then move up again. I usually take 3 at a time, like I do now, I'm just always moving fast.
