Reading in MuscularDevelopment, they suggest this is a good full body exercise... idk about that, but I don't see the use of it. All you do it pick up a heavy DB, they say that is 80-90% of your max rep capacity, and walk straight ahead for 20-30 feet, pivot and come back to your starting point.

What good is this exercise?

well you need a strong back and i know that it makes your grip very strong if you keep practicing at it, with out a good grip you wont be able to do the farmers walk and it might work your forearms some too

This exercise is for mainly your forearms. I have never done them, but I heard it's a great exercise from this decently buff doood in my gym.

Should I be 'death gripping' them to really hit the forearms, or should I just normally grip them?

dude farmers walk are one of my favorite exercises ever. No doubt about it that it hits ur whole body think about it. Your back, your trps, your legs, your forearms, your core, everything man. When i was powerlifting i would do them to help build up my endurance and i walked around the entire gym which was 60,000 square feet talk about killer workout

Personally I don't believe in straps or chalk... I do believe in belts though. If you can't get a grip, you need to work more on that before using big weights... my opinion.
