growing but not gaining

My friend has been lifting for 3 months now, and he says he is getting a lot bigger than he was before, but he only gaiined 3 pounds. Is that possibility?

Sure. You can sum it up in "newbie" gains that people experience when they first start lifting where you'll put on more muscle. If he has been dieting right, its not hard to imagine that in 3 months he could've shed a few pounds of fat and gained a few more pounds of muscle.

Then again, your friend like most guys could be just talking shit or actually believe that he has gained size.

Is it possible he says he is getting bigger but only gained three lbs?
Yes like thomas said he couldve lost some fat and replaced with 3 lbs of muscle so he appears to be or feels to be alot bigger than he was.

Most of the strength gains made in the first 1-2 months of weight training are neurological.

Most of the weight and size gains are a combination of better blood circulation resulting in a constantly "pumped" look and greater storage of glycogen and water.

Actual hypertrophy doesn't normally begin to occur until 5-10 weeks into a training program.
