I just read KM's thread on types of workouts and overcoming plateaus but I wonder how long you should work out in that regime to overcome the plateau? I mean like you realize you need to spice your workout up and you do, but how long do you do the modified workout... a week, or is it something you use as a stepping up point for more weight, reps, sets, etc?

How do you ever recognize a plateau? I mean do you keep tabs on your body like measurements, BF, etc and compare it every week or month to so where you have gotten? Personally I don't think I'd be able to see it, honestly.

The plateau that you read about is most likely workout related, seeing as it was on training. So if your weights stop going up, your reps stop going up, your form starts to get sloppy to make gains, then you most likely need to try something diffrent.
If its body composition there are probably other factors that need to be taken into account such as rest times, intensity, cardio and most importantly diet.

You will notice it when you stop increasing in size or volume of weight. Your skill level determines your Plateau cycle. If your new you wont plateau that fast. Once you have been training for a couple of year's your body will start adapting to your training routine and you will start to notice it.

Thinking about it now, I've only made gains in my DB bench press, squat, leg press, preacher curl and pec dec. Other stuff like traps and forearms get constantly shuffled around in the weight department. Like some days I will curl 105 for forearms but other days only 65. It's like magic, I know that's bull that that's what it feels like because when I maxed out on the preacher I think I did 105 [with the bar itself] and my second best was 75. If I try to do it again, fuck but I can barely make 60, it doesn't make any sense to me.
So getting out of a plateau is either more weight and less reps and sets or less weight and more sets and reps... sounds simple enough. Would you recommend any set style for breaking out, or just mix it up and see how it goes?

It's not just shuffling around weights and amount of sets/reps, you need to try different exercises aswell.
