Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is neither directly nor significantly related to muscle hypertrophy (growth).
DOMS is microtears in the sarcolemma - the membrane of the muscle fiber - and actually hampers muscle growth for a few reasons:
1. When the sacrolemma is partially torn, glucose uptake into the cell is not as efficient. Less glucose, means less energy for the cell to
synthesize protein, store glyocoen, and recover.
2. To repair these microtears, energy is needed, and thus energy is diverted away from protein synthesis.
So, as you can see, DOMS is not a good way to gauge overload (the stimulus for muscle growth).
