hey guys..when i deadlift i use the alternate grip, and im sure more of you guys do too. im right handed so i always hook with my left hand, not my right bcus it helps me lift more. its always been that way. when i look in the mirror while deadlifting i notice my right side of my back is higher than my right when deadlifting and i cant control that. does the grip have any affect on which side of the back u work more? sorry if this question is confusing/ also my left lat is smaller than my right. does deadlifting affect this, and if not how can i even out my left lat with my right? thank you guys

From what I have seen, the way your grip is, should no effect the size of your lats so much that you can tell a difference. Try one armed rows to even out your lats.

I personally like both overhand grips. I pull 500 for reps and 600 for a couple, and the reverse hook grip is very hard on a person's bicep. I've seen guys tear their biceps trying to lift extreme amounts of weight with a hook grip.

Just my thoughts, hope they help!

try this..i do it and maybe it will work for you..try not to tense your arms
that much..try to visualize them as hooks(your hands) to further minimize
tension on your arms..And always maintain shoulder protraction..As long as there is equal shoulder protraction you are working your back equally..Always be aware of which shoulder is higher and try to correct it..BTW,i use alternate grip too..It feels safe and you don't have to really rely on straps
And your Lat asymmetries may be genetic to start with. Just do proper form. And i agree with TheWall, go for one arm dumbbell rows.

I'm also right handed and i actually hook with my right hand. After a certain amount of weight, you're not going to be able to double overhand. Seeing someone being able to double overhand without straps with weight over 600 is rare. If you look at someone like Benedikt magnusson, his current best(not for long) is 970lbs and he hook grips.
Off topic: keep an eye out for him, he will break deadlift record very soon :)

People use the alternate grip because it gives a stronger grip than both hands facing. It is not due to personal preference. Most people don't have the strength in there hands to use a overhand grip(both hands facing).

I use underhand with my left hand and overhand with my right like you and have not noticed my shoulders being at different levels. Maybe you should reduce the weight and correct your form. If you have any good instructors in your gym maybe you should ask there advice.

to me that doesn't make sense.... i think alternate grip is personal preference. if you think about it logically, 1 grip has to be stronger then the other, either hook, or overhand. I dont understand how a mix of them would actually give you a physically stronger grip. The weight on the barbell is distributed evenly. The movement of a deadlift is symmetrical, and all assisting muscles contribute symmetrically. The human body is symmetrical, therefore a symmetrical grip should be just as strong as a mixed grip.

I don't use mixed because I find it throws me off. This is why i'm saying its personal preference. The logic of a mixed grip being stronger makes no sense. It's all mental, and what personally suits you best IMO.

I think what youre not understanding is that double overhand is much more difficult then with a hook grip. After a certain weight, you're not going to be able to hold the bar without it falling out of your hands. Unless you're one of 4 people who can close the #4 gripper and has extreme grip strength, you'll have to change to hook.
try it out next time you're deadlifting and you'll see what i mean
