so my buddy comes to the gym with me yesterday to workout and he broke out the Reverse Bench Bench??? instead of gripping the bar with palms towards the feet he reversed the grip so his palms were facing his head. He wanted me to try them but it looked to me like this excercise has injury written all over it. Any insight on this type of bench press? have you tried it? good or bad? does it work chest and bis+tris?

the reverse-grip bench press places the bulk of the load on the lateral triceps head while taking pressure off your shoulders - in case you have injuries from years of regular benching. It also works the pecs - but you are right - this can lead to injury, especially if you go too heavy too soon..

i would suggest staying with heavy close grips for development..

thanks for the input guys, personally i do close grip like mentioned above and i'll stick with it, might try throwing in the reverse grip with real light weight on my next burnout day to try them out though

he does get bad shoulder pains when he does incline bench and flat bench so i guess it would make sense that he does the reverse grip since miggitymags says it takes pressure off the shoulders

it's tough to say if it takes the pressure off, it could just be moving it in a diff way, but go for it man. keep us updated to how it goes

i think its a great exercise and use it all the time, great for developing mass in your tris,, if you perform it correctly it shouldn't lead to injury. i do it on the smith machine which also makes it a lot safer
