Hello,

If you had to do both squats and deadlifts on the same workout
which one would be better to do first?

I honestly never do them in the same workout i fell deadlifts are more of a back thickener then a leg developer. I also feel that both squats and dead lifts put an extreme stress on your lower back therefore i also wait a minimum of 48 hours in between my back and leg workout. However if doing them in the same day is what helps you the most i would suggest doing squats first because the squat is the king of all exercises.

I would suggest doing squats first as for me deads will were out my lower back and I wouldn't feel I would be able to do squats properly after that.

In the past I was doing Squats and Dead's in the same workout...
Squat was the first exercies...Rutine looked like that:
Squat>Hack Squat>Leg Extension(Or Leg Press)>Deadlift>Leg Curl

Probelm is that a day after this you cannot walk
But I think it's a bit too much pressure on the back bones and spine I rather split it and avoid an injurey...

I always do dead's after squats when I am doing them together, tried doing deads first but was smoked to much to keep form good on squats, but doing deads after I was always all right.

For my two cents...

I think it depends on how you're doing the deadlifts. If you keep a more direct torso, putting the emphasis on your ham's and glute's, the the lower back won't be as stressed. Not to be different in the least bit, but I put my deadlifts before my squats. Deadlifts are more of a multi-joint exercise; many core muscles involved in the movement.

When you're grasping the barbell on a squat, your shoulder blades are retracted, puttting a partial load on the middle traps. As well as to stable the bar, you're working the lumbar and lower back. So, maybe it's just me, my back is pre-exhausted if I do squats first.

But like I said, it's also personal preference.

When I set up routines that train lower body twice a week I have one squat dominant day and another deadlift dominant day. These are your two main lower body movements.

On squat day it would look something like

Back squats, sldl's, lunges, etc.

On deadlift day

Deadlifts, front squats (or hack squats), lunges, etc.

I'm not sure I can think of a situation where you would HAVE to do them both in the same workout.

If I did, though, I would deadlift first and rotate intensity. I just can't do any form of pulls when my hams are trashed from squatting.

E.g.
workout 1- deadlift med/speed, squat heavy
workout2- deadlift heavy, squat med/speed

I somehow can see that a barbell hack squat is like a deadlift but done behind instead of infront. I also do these i alternate each week sometimes ill start my routine with barbell hacksquats or end my routine with them same with barbell squats.
