Below is taken from Mike Brown's Diagnostic Bodybuilding

MIKE BROWN : 43 years in the researching and 7 years in the writing

If you are training and not gaining there has to be a reason. Before you can correct a problem, you have to be able to identify the problem.

You may have been taught that, in order to induce rapid muscular growth, you have to "train to failure." This is nonsense, though it has been parroted by almost everyone ever since Arthur Jones introduced the concept in 1970 to promote his Nautilus machines. Training to failure is a good way to injure yourself. You should train to stimulate the body, not destroy it.

You may have been taught that "six small meals a day" is the way to gain. Again, every one parrots this nonsense. "Six small meals a day" is a good way to put your energy levels in the toilet. You're shoving food out of the way before it has a chance to digest. I.e., you aren't giving your body sufficient time to convert your food to energy and muscle tissue. This concept was introduced by a 23-year-old named Vern Bickel in the 1950s who only used it for six weeks. It was a brief bulking up program.

You may be taking whey protein and it "isn't working." Whey only stays in the body for 90 minutes, while sodium caseinate (both derived from milk) stays in the body for 7 hours.

You may have a tilted pelvis, muscles that contracted and won't release (anything that feels like a rope or a pebble while the surrounding muscle tissue is pliable is contracted muscle tissue), or other problems. Let us show you how to find and fix the problem so you will gain.

How many times have you hit "sticking points" or plateaus? In this book Mike Brown shows you the secret to overcoming sticking points known to only three men in the entire twentieth century. One of those men was the original owner of what later became the York Barbell Company. The other two men were the "world's strongest man" in his time-one in the 1920s and other in the 1930s. One stood 6' tall and weighed 260 with a "six-pack" and a legitimate 19.5" arm. The other stood 5' 8" and weighed 230. He also had "cuts." This was in the days before protein supplements or anabolic steroids. This method will work just as well for you.

Diagnostic Bodybuilding includes photos, a Bibliography, Glossary and Index.

so does that mean all pros are making a mistake by eating like 6-10 times a day?

I'll start by saying excellent marketing scheme.

You may be taking whey protein and it "isn't working." Whey only stays in the body for 90 minutes

Bodybuilders take whey knowing that it will digest quickly, they don't expect amazing results from it. Unlike a random person in the street that might expect to gain 10 pounds from a container that holds 5 pounds in total calories if every gram was turned into muscle.

I won't even get into the other stuff, I'd rather save my 20 dollars for a few good pounds of meat instead of that book.

the science of BB is always changing and the only thing that changes faster are the opinions of body builders themselves. If you have the money to spare buy the book who knows this may work better in your case. Different points of view are great try the most popular way for six months track your progress and try his way and track again see for yourself. If you do keep us informed. Personally I have found things work best for me on a 4 meal a day schedule (food) and a whey morning shake and casein evening but have friends who do 6 food and 2 shake. As far as training and progression we are neck and neck so who knows. When speaking about human individuality there are far too many variables to just throw out a blanket flow chart to follow IMHO.-UC

When a site has something like "How many times have you hit "sticking points" or plateaus? In this book Mike Brown shows you the secret to overcoming sticking points known to only three men in the entire twentieth century."

Something like that always shouts gimic to me.

Another thing I don't understand from what he says is this, I thought that eating 6 meals a day was based around amino acid peaks in the body, not just bulking wise. Additionally, a person who eats more would have a higher metabolism, so why would it be a more efficient bulk to eat more times through the day like he says the practice was based off of?

I totally agree that theres no blanketed formula for the best way to train. But I think this guy, along with that site that was posted just a few weeks ago that I was bashing is meant to squeeze money out of people.

How many times to eat a day is debatable, some people will eat more at once and eat less meals a day and still make good gains.

I think a lot of people, including PRO's have to eat 6-10 times per day just based on the big amounts of calories per day.

Honestly I don't have the stomach size to eat 3,500 calories, much less 5,000+ calories per day in 4 sittings, a full cup of rice which becomes 3 cups after it is cooked if 600 calories, there is no way in hell I could shove 6 cups of rice down me at one time, so personally I have to eat like 6 or more times a day.

The other reason I have to eat more times a day is because I get really full and it takes a few hours before I can eat again. I personally like to eat more times a day so I am not full to the point of filling sick all day.

Any book can have good points or bad points or information, either way not all will apply to us because everybody's body is a little bit different and whether things are "rules" or "proven" even then those things do not work the best for everyone.

My view is, listen to all advice good or bad sounding and give it a try, if it works great, if not on to the next. It's all about finding what works for you.

Sounds interesting. but the part about only three men in the 20th century knowing about sticking points sounds like BS. If this book is so revolutionary then I better look like ronnie when im done reading it.
