In my opinion... Ab's should be done before any other workout. Simply because i hate getting done with my main workout and being all exhausted and have ab's left. So if i do them first it makes it more convinient.

If you do abs first, you'll have a better chance of pushing all the glycogen out of the muscle so that when you do do cardio u'll be burning fat and keeping your bodyfat low even though you're on a bulk.

Who does abs?

Personally I deadlift approx 500 pounds for reps... Squat approx 500 for reps...

Why should I do abs? If I over work my abs and exhaust them out more than I need to, I will tear that muscle. AKA Hernia.

I've NEVER done abs.

As for cardio, I do stretch before I get onto a treadmill on off days. Stretch for 5-10 mins before and 5-10 mins after. I feel it warms me up to do cardio and allows my body to be a little more loose. I do cardio in the AM and a good stretch wakes you up.

IMO,
TheWall

Correct. But I plan to compete this summer or later in the fall.

Look at the bodybuilding greats, they had powerlifting backgrounds.

I have the look more of a bodybuilder, not of a powerlifter.

But I can still lift some heavy weight.

Plus, its all what you are about, I love the heavy weight. Cant get any better than that!

I happen to agree.

Any exercise that forces you to stabilize and keep a rigid torso like a squat and deadlift will have a far greater impact upon the abs than crunches.

Secondly, if you really want to work your abs, then try a few sets of dumbell and barbell swings. Abs are like any other muscle, and must be trained that way.

Lastly, abs should be done LAST in the workout. Your abs make up a large portion of your core, and play a huge role in torso stabilization. You don't want to fatigue your abs when you'll be needing them to balance your core while lifting weights. This goes from doing a deadlift to doing a barbell curl.

IMO, you should do 5 minutes of low-intensity cardio to warm up your body first, then do your stretches. And after the workout, do the stretches as well.

From my experience and knowledge, you are more likely to tear a muscle stretching cold muscles.

I dont necessarily believe you should avoid training abs during the week, but i agree with your last point. I know that when i am sore in my abdominals, it hurts to do almost any exercise where i have to use my core to stabilize myself. Even on machines this can happen.

I cant imagine doing a great set of ab/core work and then hitting squats. Yikes at the possibility of injury.

I do abs last yes that makes total sense.i can do my whole workout and not get wore out like I would on my abs.I say last but i do cardio after them. All the power excersises do hit the abs and hit them hard but for me I feel they still need some direct work. For some like the wall maybe this indirect is plenty lol that would make him one of the lucky ones.i really have top work at my abs for them to look decent.
