Im not saying that it doesnt help reduce fat, because it does, as any fasted-state activity will, but just like running at a steady pace on a treadmill works, its not optimal compared to HIIT or interval training in general.

Some people dont care about the muscle loss, but with his goals "trying to slim down a little bit at a time and maintain if not add a little mass" id say off-day HIIT is the best bet, as it burns the least amount of muscle and arguably the most amount of fat, especially with adequate nutrition before, during, and after.

The logic behind running in the morning is since you are in a fasted state your body will burn fat for fuel. There are two problems with this claim.

1. If you are doing any cardio that is anaerobic in nature (HIIT) your body will degrade proteins into amino's then aminos into glucose via gluconeogenesis in the liver and then release them into the blood stream to be utilized by muscles for fuel. This, obviously, is not a good thing.

2. Even if the work is aerobic, muscle will still be broken down with fats for fuel.

3. Intensity will be lower, and thus so will the post exercise oxygen consumption, where fats are utilized as fuels for recovery.

4. Building off number 3. The more carbohydrates used for fuel during any workbout, and the higher the intensity, the greater the excess post exercise oxygen consumption, and the longer and greater amount of fats that will be oxidized for fuel during recovery.

So, in terms of muscle sparing there is no reason to do cardio first thing in the AM on an empty stomach.

In terms of oxidizing fats post workout during recovery, you are limited by empty stomach AM cardio.

Simply put, AM cardio is a myth of the past.

Next, please show me some conclusive proof where glutamine (ingested orally) preserves muscle in a fasted state.

Even if your math is off, your logic surrounding cardio is sound
