i used to when i was at school, i played centre. for the position you play its all about speed, well mainly about speed. do some speed drills, also incorporate the weight training as this will obviously help you out.

Never played rugby but played football for a long time and the most best exercise for explosion is the power clean in my opinion. It will make you a man beast. Also Speed Training with plyometrics, etc.

if you are playing on the wing, you will want to put alot of focus on speed and agility...strength is important in rugby, no matter what position. do compound movements like bench press, squat, deads etc and the power clean is very good (as mentioned above). i played as a lock in the 2nd row so that was pretty much all leg and shoulders. do heavy and low reps for the compound movements (for strength) but incorporate moderate weight and moderate reps for other excercises (for endurance). do things like speed drills, shuttle runs, circuit training etc

when playing rugby and training for it, dont just believe that strength is the only requirement. England's victory at the 2003WorldCup was put down to their intense rugby league style training eg the touch and go method

Dont forget Plyometrics, I did plyo and speed training with an olympic silver medalist trainer and it helped my 40 out alot (40 yd. dash). Along with Fast Twitch Lifts, plyo's work wonders. I went from a 4.68 to a 4.45 in less than a year and gained weight.

Didn't you just come up with a new routine a few days ago, with the help of others? Was that thread just to waste time?

Why come up with a bodybuilding split if you're trying to improve your rugby performance?

I have to agree with mabo, shouldn't you be doing sports specific movements rather than weight lifting, and don't you have a coach, and shouldn't he know enough about the game to point you in the right direction? I know when I wanted to improve my curveball I didn't ask for a new bodybuilding split.

with the way the game is evolving the old school thinking of having a winger sacrificing size for speed is now obsolete, your going to want to do your power movements like these guys said but also get your assister muscles up to par (ie rotator cuff) all fine and dandy if you can run a blur, but get in the way of a 120kg prop who catches you and if your assister muscles (stabilizers) and joints aren't strong then your going to be spending more time in injury rehab then on the paddock. just learnt the hard way from experience.
