We had a seated rotation machine at my gym (er..."fitness club"), but 24 hour fitness took it out...

So what's good for working the obliques? I've done side bends with 45# weights but they're nothing...I was doing the seated rotation at its max which was 200# or so (granted, machines are always a lot easier). I can do 45# side bends all day.

Or are obliques one of those things you don't really have to worry about? I don't get into training the minor muscles like the serratus, etc., figuring they'll grow along with the rest. I do weighted ab crunches now and praying ab kneels on the pulldown periodically at about 100#.

Yeah, I'm 5'7" and 235# but I got some steel under that fat ;-) Love it when the treadmill bunnies are straining to do their 25th weightless crunch and I sit down next to them and crank off 300 in a row...

Ilove training and bringing out the obliques bt I jusr grab the 60-8- lb dumbells and do around 15-20 a set.
You can also do side crunches. My obliques usually score me a few points in the shows

my absolute favorite oblique exercise is a russian twist, grab a 20-25lb DB, and sit down on a decline bench, lean back at a 90 degree angle and twist while holding the weight strait out with both hands. Works wonders

Opposite to Kaboom I absolutly hate training obliques. I hate training abs also. I lift in a HITT/DC and Powerlifting and I feel as if my midsection will give out if I do more for my abs.

When I squat and deadlift I feel I work them out enough. But if you arn't into heavy movements then, yes that would be fine to workthem out as you wish or as kaboom said. He's a pretty smart guy-listen to him.

Sincerly,
TheWall

I don't think they're necessary. But that's just me.

Any ab crunch variation for obliques will help. Here's a sight by simply searching Google. Exercises for Oblique Muscles

I like the russian twists (aka mason twists) really reaks havoc on the obliques, grab a 10lb db and try and do 50 of them! You will be on your side crying lol. I wouldn't do side bends with weights because that will actually increase your waist, and you don't want that.

Higher reps with lower weights is the key, just like abs. The heavier and heavier you go the bigger the muscle will get, taking away from your waist line and vtaper, you can get the best abs in the world with 30 lbs if you wanted to, high reps!

Excellent advice.

Equally good are bar swings, over head walking lunges, cleans, snatches, etc. All these exercises will develop your abs to a far greater extent (because they all place more overload on them) than any crunches or side twist machines.
