What are the advantages/disadvantages to doing sumo style DLs as opposed to the normal form. I've never done sumo style and want to know if I should. Thanks - Doug.

Sumo allows you to get into a deeper stance without bending as much at the waist. You'll use more hips and abductors then in regular dead lifts. It's a good exercise to add to help with strength and power if you use a wide stance when squatting.

Sumos take more back out of it like redzip mentioned. I would say to switch it up if you can.

ZiR has it right. One of my favorite books, Strength Training Anatomy, illustrates the muscles used in each exercise and for Sumo DLs it's just as ZiR described.

Thanks for the insight gents. Sorry I didn't realize how many posts there already are on this topic. I think I'll just stick with normal form and rack pulls to boost my dl to 500 by May.

Don't forget about platform pulls.

Also, always put the weight down and take a new grip between reps if you are training for an increased 1rm
