I have done the cardio first thing in the AM on an empty stomach, it has worked. And Layne is correct, the body will metabolize itself (muscles into amino's for fuel), ESPECIALLY if you are already lean. Remember, the body's last form of energy is fat, fat is more dense than muscle, fat is what saved us from famine during paleolithic times, fat is what the body has evolved to burn last when stores run low.
Now, back to the first question I posed. Which physique would you rather have. That of Joeseph Adia, or that of Lance Armstrong?
Would you rather do 15-20 minutes of cardio at your liesure, burn 500 calories, and elevate your metabolism (which will oxidize fats for fuel to recover) for 8-20 hours after?
or
Would you rather perform 45 minutes first thing in the AM, burn 500 calories, some of which will come from muscle, and elevate your metabolism for an hour or two after?
EPOC is the secret. But its no secret, Flex Magazine and Muscle and Fiction just rewrite the same garbage information each month with new pictures of enhanced bodybuilders. In fact, they've rewrote less and less articles because 70% of the magazines now are advertisements. [end rant.]

All this is good information to have, but the bottom line is " when you find the time to do the cardo" is what matter's the most.
If you have time in the morning do i then, no one fully
retains all there muscle throughout there entire life. You will loose muscle it's eminent. It's going to happen. You can however take steps to prevent it.
casein powder at night into the morning will help prevent it. Time allowing.
If you have time at night after everthing is done, work, school, errands and such then do it then. If you have the energy and effort.
It comes down to what time works best for you.
