Hi, a question thats been buggin me since some ******* in the gym decided to start analysing my every move in there the other day.

He said that doing heavy upright rows was really bad for the rotator cuffs, anyone else think this?
(my form at the time was good)

Also I was wondering if other people use upright rows as part of a back routine, or part of a shoulder routine?

Upright row is a lateral deltoid exercise. It should be at least. When you do them, you involve a lot of other muscles, suck as trapezius, partly biceps etc etc. these are stronger muscles... this means that u can lift very heavy weight, but that doesnt mean the lateral deltoid can handle his part of the work. Therefore it gets overtrained/ gets to much work, and will get injured.

In other words, upright row is a great exercise if u remember to keep the weight low so u dont overdo the amount of stress u put on the lateral deltoid, even though all the other muscles can handle much more weight...

Have fun

I just did them this morning but I have been using the cables and going with lighter weight after I do shrugs. Should be worked with shoulders, IMO .

If you go with lighter weight and go just above your chin you will burn the traps with upright rows.

when an ******* gives u **** in the gym, simply smile walk away to the dumbell rack, choose one u can lift with ease(i prefer 40lbs for this exercise) then smack said ******* with the dumbell, preferably in the face, and then make sure to get back to your workout and dont miss any sets. This has worked for me in the past.

also i love heavy upright rows, they blow up my traps, love em, a shoulder/trap workout aint complete for me til i do the heavy rows

I like to keep them light weight because the heavy weight seems to hurt my shoulders more. I use them for shoulder workouts.

damn, that's one of my main focus excercises. What other excercises are there for shoulders? I currently do
Military press, standing flies, front raises, and shrugs.

Thanks, thats a lot of food for thought. Really good point about the supporting muscles maybe being stronger than the lats. I'll keep them in my shoulder routine, and pay more attention to my traps as I'm doing the excercise.

I think if you do them with dumbells it would be alot easier on your shoulders because it would be more free motion rather than being restricted to the barbell grip.
