How wide of a grip do you guys use for the barbell shoulder press?

August 15 2006 - 173 lbs

I use the same grip width I use for bench press and most any exercises using a barbell. Just line it up with your thumbs is what I do.
Sometimes, I'll go wider grip to hit certain areas, though.

on the olympic ones, there should be two marks on the barbell...thats wat i use

I'd say wider than shoulder width.
If it's too close, it'll work more of your triceps for most exercises.

agreed. this is generally where i use it. i also judge when the bottom of my tricep is parallel to the ground and where the bar is even with my mouth. if you can find a hand placement where those two occur at the same time that is good too.

Here's an illustration I drew. (yes, I was very bored, hah)

The blue painted area is the grip area which I use for exercises unless it's a close grip exercise. The outside line is the widest I'll use, and the inside line is the closest I'll use.

When I grip for both bench and shoulder press it feels more natural for me to grip a little wider out because I have long arms. Its probably about a fist-width wider than shoulder width. My pinky is usually on the ring.
