ok second new thread for the day its something that always used to puzzle me yet not enough to ask questions until today. i was training at a different gym today doing deads and i used a grip with palms facing towards me, a gym supervisor came up to me told me it was wrong. so naturally i asked why? his response was "oh it just it your supposed to have one hand facing in, and one out" "ok got that but...why?" to this he just kept the stunned mullet look.

so yea this is my question for everyone to ponder is there any real reason for gripping this way?

I honestly don't think there is an INCORRECT way to hold the bar as such...i think that different grips just further utilise different groups of muscles. Your still essentially performing the same movement, so not much is goin to change...your still gripping the bar, but depending on which way your palms face, will usilise different parts of the arms and shoulders. Furthermore, i think that by using an alternate grip, it gives the body a feeling of balance and eveness...maybe its just me, or maybe the centre of gravity is further corrected through an alternate grip?

hmm thats a fair call, its just when i looked at it from the view of which muscles were under tension in the arms i was thinking that by just gripping the one way might create an uneven development in your forearms.

....mmmmm i have been told to change up your grip every session, might prevent something like this. Still, I think different grips do employ different muscles, but in the grand scheme of deadlift mechanics, doesnt really mean that much.

possibly it may not make much difference to your overall development tri, but i was curious as to how it came about nobody really seemed to know, and for me i found my bicep on one arm felt really strained and the other did not.

Yes i guess this can happen, it is an akward feeling trying to evenly balance the weight when your hands are gripping in 2 seperate fashions. Don't forget to pull with your back and not your arms, focus on maintaining a solid grip without using your upper arms.

Reverse grip and a Snatch grip, don't think it makes a difference

theres nothing wrong with keeping your palms facing towards you,
I think, that the alternate grip helps balance the bar out more, think about it if both palms are facing the same way, one shoulder could be lower down then the other which could mean you might injure yourself. if you have an alternate grip it almost impossible to have one arm lower than the other

The whole balence out thing is BS.

Most peple use an alternating grip.

If you go no straps and plms towrd you you ned to use what is known as a hook grip or thumb hook. I don't like it and it feeels like yourr thumb or thumbnail is going to rip off.
