I have a small tear in my rotator cuff. The army doctor wants me to cease and disast all training. Told me I can only do physical therapy for the next three months. I train now and it hurts when I go heavy on bench and sholder presses, it also affect me when I hit a high rep count. Should I listen and stop all training or are there training alternatives. I just got back into training after a year in the desert and do not want to stop right now.

PLEASE HELP!!!

stop training before you damage it further, 3 months is better than tearing it completely and being out for 6 months or longer. listen to the doc.

you can also speed up recovery slightly by getting a soft massage on it twice a week and applying heat packs.

From one of my other posts:

The most effective is the side-lying abduction, which activates the supraspinatus, subscapularis and infraspinatus. The side-lying abduction involves the person selecting a dumbbell of low weight initially when first training - four or five kilograms. The lifter lies on a bench sideways, with the arm next to his side and slightly flexed at the elbow. The dumbbell should then be raised towards the ceiling to a 45 degree angle, with the arm still flexed and close to the body, at a pace of two seconds up and four seconds down. The side-lying abduction does not involve the teres minor, but moderately involve the deltoid muscles, making it an excellent all-round shoulder exercise.

2.

Description
Another exercise is the propped external rotator, which targets the infraspinatus and teres minor. The lifter should sit perpendicular to the barbell, with his arm flexed at 90 degrees at the elbow and the forearm resting parallel on the barbell. Again, selecting a dumbbell of modest weight if just beginning, raise the dumbbell up until the forearm points up. Slowly lower the dumbbell and repeat, exercising both arms.

3.

End:

Description:
The final exercise is the lateral raise with internal rotation (LRIR). Grasping a dumbbell in both hands, the lifter should internally rotate his arm so that his extended thumbs point towards the floor - as if the lifter is emptying a drink into a bin. The lifter should then raise his arms sideways, with the thumbs still pointing downwards, until the dumbbells are just below the shoulders. The LRIR primarily targets the supraspinatus.

I personally have had much success with number 1.

Hate to tell you this but a rotatorcuff tear can only be repaired by surgery. And even then you will probally never regain the strength and pain free lifting you once enjoyed.

Follow your doctors advice. And hope to god its a small tear... If so pt may beable to fix it to a certain extent.

that's for complete tears, he only has a minor tear, so rest, ice packs and heat packs will help recovery without the need for surgery. the next step usually taken before surgery is steroid injections into the injured area administered by a doctor. surgery is last option if the injury refuses to heal, but you are right about how it will always be weaker and susceptible to more damage easily

Thats interesting... I had a slight fray or tear of my rotator cuff, Possible labrum tear, bone spurs, ect... And none of those you listed worked for me. I tried PT, cort injections, and finally we resorted to surgery. Im not yet fully recovered but i mean they say i will always have some pain.

there are other means to recovery depending on how bad the tear is and how well your body reacts to the recovery process, but yes you will always easily susceptible to more damage in that area and it will always be either painful or uncomfortable. it's a very small but very important muscle(which one isn't?) and should be looked after with the utmost care.

It depends on how extensive the damage is.

I'm going in for a special MRI where they are injecting some dye into my sholder first. The doc said he fears that I may have also tore the cartilage in the sholder joint...He also said I can do legs and abs and certain back exercises. I figure I'll have an ureal core when I will be able to go hard again but he told me it will most likely put me on the shelf for three months.

Well i had my surgery about three months ago and my shoulder is starting to feel like new! We figure ill be able to start working out and everything at the end of this month. So stick in there its not as bad as you may think.

Also it will get hard finding the motivation to lift just legs and ab's. I tried and well found it the most difficult.
