So is anyone gonna give advice on which exercises to do with bad knees? Ever since my injury I do half squats and half leg presses (don't even bother with lunges, if one knee is bad I can't even think about putting all the stress on it alone). I go down to just above parallel and use light enough weight that I fail at around 25 reps.

What sucks about it the most is that squats really help your overall physique grow. So not being able to do full squats means not only are my leg workouts not getting the full benefit, but the rest of my body isn't either.

I guess the only thing I have going for me is that even though I'm an ectomorph whose still pretty lean, I've always had good, thick legs. No chicken legs for this hardgainer. I don't know anyone else whose calves are actually bigger than his arms.

Honestly I don't know a great deal about osgood slaughters specifically. If your problem is as serious as you say it is, I agree with the advice given that you should see a professional in person rather than rely on internet advice.

Find a good sports physical therapist rather than a trainer. In my experience doctors tend to be over-conservative in their recommendations regarding weight training, and most trainers aren't likely to have much knowledge about specific knee problems.

Thing is you need someone to watch your movements in person. Particularly if you have one knee worse than the other. Remember that everything is connected, a problem at the knee can quickly turn into problems at the ankle, hip and lower back if it's causing you to lift unevenly.

Do you get pain when squatting to full depth even without weight? If so, it's probably a good idea to work on that before you start worrying about squatting and leg pressing with reduced ROM.

There's plenty of time to get big and strong but you only get one set of knees. I guess the main point I'm trying to make is to strive to get your knees as healthy as possible rather than just trying to work around the injury.

Oh and FWIW, most people I know have calves bigger than their arms.

Hope this helps.

If this is of any help to you TD389, my plan over the past ~6 weeks has been to be able to start squatting/leg pressing. My test strategy has been doing leg extensions with whatever weight I can use to begin building strength in my quads and strengthen all the junk in my knees also(work your hams too though). Leg extensions seem to be lower stress, and I can now leg press with more ease. All the help everyone else has given seems to be helping now too.
