It builds strength. You also know how much you can lift. By knowing that, then you can base your workouts arround that number and beat it or get +1 rep in with that weight. It's more of a PowerLifter thing.

also, because the weight if soo heavy that you can only get one rep with it, it also makes it EXTREMLY dangerous in some exersizes.

the heavier weight, the more muscle fibres are incorporated into the movement, so it can be used to build mass too.

Also it can break plateus. A lot of times when I max a weight seems beyond my limit but when I attempt a 1 rep max success of failure you get a feel for that weight and the next time around your not afraid of it.

Plus not to metnion all the great comments above.

The bit downside to try to get a one rep max are the effects that are created from it.

1. To find out you true one rep max you'll have to be at your mental and physical peak, that pretty much means you'll do a thorough warmup then go for your 1 rep max. After that you pretty much won't be able to train right because of how taxing it is on your body.

2. CNS effects from 1 rep max can just be brutal. It can just wipe you out for a while.

I think it's more for competition uses or just for the ego. It's nice to see how much you can lift for a one rep max but you don't have to do them. If you do decide to do them don't do then to often and make sure you do them safely.
