Hi Guys,

Now I am really confused (I guess that's not that hard to do) :-) I have been reading several threads here and there is a lot of mixed feelings on split training vs. whole body workouts. Just need a couple more opinions here :-)

To give you some background. I am 34 / 6'3" and 225lbs. I came down from 280lbs to 225lbs since February of this year. I used to be in the Marines and after I got out I gained about 70lbs. I am of course, following a low carb, high protein diet and doing a 6 day workout. I started the first 3-4 months doing split:
Day 1 - Chest, Tri, Cadio
Day 2 - Back, Biceps, Cardio
Day 3 - Shoulders, Legs, and Abs
Repeat the same on day 4, 5, and 6.

Well, after recommendations from a friend, I changed to the "body for life" workout program. Which is actually a semi-split (upper body one day and lower the next). However, I was not really feeling the workouts that much. So I am in the middle of changing back to the split workout I mentioned before.

My goal (like probably everyone else here) is increase muscle mass and tone up. I am sure that at 34 I am a little too old to become a true bodybuilder :-), but I would like to get your opinion on this workout or on any you may suggest for my goal, age, situation, etc.

All information would be greatly appreciated!

i could suggest a few plans for you, but in the end it wont matter. no matter what i, or anyone else on here tells you, everyone's body reacts different to different routines.

just try to find what works best for you.

^^bro if you have info you think is relevant always post it, dont be afraid. true, everyones body reacts differently , but his body might love the advice your giving him.

anyway, santosomar, its basically up to you regarding how you want to train. if you were gaining mass with your other split before the "fit for life" program return to that. IMO, if you want to keep the same muscle groupings and days that is fine but i think you should rearrange the days a little and add a fourth workout in. to repeat all of those groupings on 4 and 5 and 6 is a little much, you need to rest.
Heres what i suggest:

Day 1: chest, tri,
Day 2: off
Day 3: legs, abs
Day 4: shoulders, traps?
Day 5: off
Day 6: back, bi's
Day 7 : off

You change whatever you feel neccesary, however, you need at least 2 or 3 days off a week.

ill be the first person to admit this (and im not speaking for everyone, just from what ive seen too).. not too many of the guys here know the know how.. they just go by what works for them as an individual.
i dont think there is any restrictions on ages, but anyone here who comes into this thread will try and sell you the routine of training they do.

if they didnt, it would be like Mike Mentzer creating the Heavy Duty training system then going to his clients and saying "no, just do high volume training, 20 sets or so per bodypart, gym 6 days of the week".
it just dosnt work like that.

so i can only say you have to find something that you beleive you'll like and reap the most benefit from. i cant tell you what youll benefit the most from so your going to have to figure it out. go PM some guys here.
beefcake, sparkydustin, lil big junior, myself, eastcoasthighlander and other distungiushed members use very exotic training schemes. check it out. ask around

ohh i should, while im at it, point out that my routine is built around my strengths and weaknesses. legs are, and should always be a priority for everyone though (unless they grow really easy for you)

all i meant is that the best way to find a routine that works for u is to keep trying. everyone's body has different amounts of punishment that they can absorb.
