It's how the weight is distributed thru the legs. pushing with thru your heels of your feet,, keeping your knees in ward instead of letting them sway out.
I use both in my routines. I have noticed soreness in different areas of my quads. Front focuses on the middle to front part of the quad, whereas the behind neck focuses on the middle to back part. Depending on your skill level, and where you position your feet. It does take a little time to get accustomed to the positioning of the bar. But if you use both techniques you will have well developed legs. Watch Layne's sticky he does them and he has great legs and awesome detail,, the detail part is from this diet , striations.
I'm sure other's will add to this which will give you a better perspective on the bar positioning.
