some guy at my gym told me that the only way you can get bigger is by adding weight on every set you do like 10 then 8 then 6. is that true or can you also do it buy just doing it 10 to 12 times and adding weight when you feel you can do more?

u wanna add more weight n push more reps on each set??? ur goin the opposite way bro...did u mean drop setting...

for example on the bench i have;
set 1 400lbs 1 rep
set 2 drop weight to 350lbs 2 reps
set 3 drop weight to 300 4 reps
set 4 drop weight to 250 6 reps

is this what u mean??? i hope it was, lol

if this is what u mean then yes u build serious mass, but its not easy bro...

200 lbs bench 10 reps
255 lbs bench 8 reps
305 lbs bench 6

and the question i had was if thats the ONLY way to get bigger

No, he's absolutely wrong. I used to do that myself, pyramiding up to a heavy weight. It wasn't too effective. For size you want to stay within the rep range of 8-12. You don't need to go any heavier than that.

Unless you want to throw in a few sets for strength, you should just keep to 8-12 reps. I like to include some heavy sets when I workout so that my strength gains are as constant as I can get them.

so long as your lifting a certain amount of weight regularly you will grow. how much you grow depends on calorie/fat intake.

Yes, yes, yes, eating is the only way to put on size. But the right rep range to put on size is generally from 8-12. Thats where the greatest amounts of muscular hypertrophy will occur at.

First thing you should do is go find the guy that told you this and bitch slap him for being so stupid. Second thing you should do is read through the training forum to get a rough idea of a work out plan that you want to try, though at your age you should stick to core movements for a while. When I'm training I dont necesarily stick to a set plan sometimes I do Pyramids, sometimes I do down the rack, sometimes I just train by feel. Everybody is different and everybody grows different so for one person to tell you that there is only one way to grow is completley stupid.
