I have heard guys doing a full body workout, about 6 to 8 sets per body part everyday six days a week. But they switch between days of light and heavy. Light days only using machines with high reps and heavy days using free weights and using low reps. I think this would tax the body to much and impair growth. Anyone try this?

Sounds like too much volume. You should only train a muscle group max twice a week depending on your routine. The muscle grows while you rest, not at the gym.
