So i have recently started deadlifting, about 4 sessions into it. Last time i finally threw some decent weight on there about 275lbs for 6 reps. Now in magazines and **** whenever they show the deadlift they never have belts on. I put one on for my last 2 sets when i was doing 275, because when i ever did power cleaning or squating in highschool our coach made sure we were wearing belts and i for sure didn't want to screw up my back. but the next day and that night my lower back was sore, extremely sore, no sharp pain but definetly not a feeling i ever want again.

should i be wearing a belt every set? or would that be counter productive? What am i supposed to do to deadlift properly

My dad used to bodybuild very seriously when he was younger so he handed me his old belt and told me to use it whenever I do heavy squats and deads. I use it and I think it works wonders for my back, since it prevents it from stiffining up the next day. Different strokes for different folks though, its a preferance thing.

I was always told that a strong midsection/core is the best belt you could imagine.

a belt is good for when you go heavy, but you can do without during warm ups to help strengthen your core. being really sore with no pain means you had a real badass workout, i love the days i can't get out of bed bc of a good back day.

i have been doing serious deadlifts for the past 6 months and still the day after I am sore in the back, it works out the back. Its not a bad thing that your muscles are so after, it just means your breaking them down and rebuilding.

No belt for warmup sets, Belt for working sets. After a back workout (with HEAVY deads) everytime I take a step the next day my muscles in my lower back ache so bad, but my back has gotten THICK because of them.

Unless you have a very quality belt you might as well not wear anything. I use a belt with anything over 275 on the deadlift. I've pulled 500. A belt although it serves two purposes, one to make you stronger and two to protect your spine, in the end it is nothing more than a crutch. Hence why lighter work should be done w/o one to allow those muscle to work independently subsequetly gaining core strength.
