They can be bad if performed out of your shoulder alignment. I use them but moderate weight and no higher than my sternim(sp). You just don't want to use a lot of force and snapping at the end of the movement.

yeah, what jay said.

Make sure your doing the movement nice and fluid and under control. I usually bring the bar up to right underneath my chin. Also, as jay said, dont try going very heavy, otherwise your setting yourself up for shoulder issues.

I had heard that for years, I have a chronic left shoulder problem, i will have it the rest of my life. I love uprights, they don't cause me any discomfort and they are great at getting upper midback and side/front delts. I like them on a cable, standing with a slight lean back and pausing at the top. The free-weight I like a bit more ballistic style and it's a bit harder to feel vs cable, but variety keeps me from getting stale.

I have found tha although I have inpingement issues with the traditional narrow grip pulling to chin that a wide grip to my chest works great and causes no impingement problems.

I just read in the new M&F issue that the closer grip you have on upright rows, the more the traps get worked. The wider grip, the more the front and side delts get worked. I've changed it to a wider grip.
