I do it as well. Shawn Ray gave out that advice to someone I've talked to who trained with him once and since then I've done it and have been very happy with the results.

hmm sounds like a good idea...ill try that...but another way to do shrugs is to use the E-Z curl bar and grab the inner grip to shrug.....also u cud do dumbbell 21's shrugs where u grab dumbells and u do 7 in the front....7 on the side...and 7 behind the back

I think it's almost reactionary to bring the head down and forward a little as you do the movement. I've always done it that way.

I look down when doing BB shrugs to the rear, but I actually tilt my chin upward a bit when doing them to the front.

Good question ... i think its really your preference. I tend to do side dumbell shrugs and front machine shrugs more so than behind the back barbell shrugs. I find dumbells target the muscle better. Although people like Haney said do shrugs from the back because thats where they are located.

IMO its really personal preference

21's= a good idea man ill def try that
sometimes i do them behind the back and i do them in the power rack so i can lean forward and drag the barbell up the supports
sometimes also do a shrug normally but bring your elbows up with it, so its kind of a side uprite row and its hard but i feel them good
goodluck

when I was training my traps twice a week one day I would hit them with behind the back and db shrugs, then the next time I trained them I would hit them from the side. So variety I must say.

Must say Im in favor of DB Shrugs or Behind Back Shrugs though, I'm not exactly too fond of BB Shrugs.
