I’m having a hard time building muscle in the way that I want to. So after a year and a half I have decided that its way too hard for me to get "big" so I started running to the gym from where I work, (workout) and then run back to my job. (About two miles there and back) I’m still taking in about 185 grams of protein a day and still using my same workout routine. I figured if I cant be at the size I want to be at I mite as well be in shape and tone up a bit. What kind of body changes am I going to see by doing this? To me I thought I would start "cutting" up and start "looking" bigger because I have more definition.
Oh and I weight 185lbs (I was at 200lbs) about 6,1" and I just recently stopped smoking so I have not ran in like 3 years…..this shit is killing me!!
<----- out of shape

if it was hard for you to get you probably just werent eating enough or properly or maybe a combination.

With the running your bodyfat will get lower, which brings me to my next question which will probably get you more answers. What is your current bodyfat?

Don't give up on the size thing.

I'd say calculate what calories you would need to gain weight. Then keep an accurate food log for a week or two. You will be suprised how regularly you will come in under the daily needs. I know I suprised myself.

Learn to eat! It'll change the way you view 'hardgaining'.
