Just thinking about your muscles can help make them stronger, a study revealed yesterday.
Thirty people did bicep curls under 3 conditions - thinking only about their muscles and how they worked, thinking about the weight they were lifting, then thinking about whatever they wanted. Scientists found "much more" muscle activity when the subjects thought about their muscles and how they moved.
Other studies have shown thinking about muscles when performing skills such as throwing a ball can make activities more difficult.
Dr David Marchant, who led the research at the university of Hull, said: "Sports coaches would benefit from tailoring their instructions. When they want people to improve their performance, thinking about outcomes is best. When they want athletes to exercises their muscles or recover from injury, thinking about movement is helpful."
The findings are being presented at the British Pschological Society's conference in Cardiff.
Finally the mind-muscle connection us BBers have been banging on about gets "realised"!
