I've been having really bad knee pains for the past 2 months and its really ruined my leg work outs..

My gym only has a smith machine to do squats with, and i'm too scared to do them because i believe my knee pain is because of the smith squats.

Theres not even a leg press at my gym.

I can't afford to move gyms because i have a contract for a year and they wont let me cancel!!!!!!

So basically the only leg machines at my gym are,leg ext,leg curl, calf raise and hack squat.

I guess this will have to do.

anyone else experienced knee pains using the smith machine?

Hi Pain

Knee pain can be horrible. I am wondering do you use knee wraps? Some times the extra suport will avoid agrovating it.

Also when do you start to feel the pain. Is it during the movement or afterwoods? If you know when in the movement do you feel it?

Just one more question when you squat in the smith do you end up on your toes. Some times people squat in this fashion and it places tremendous pressure on the knee joint?

There are several things that you can do but the rule of thumb is to avoid the movement that causes the pain

I can't use the smith machine eitherthe angle it makes my knee hurts bad. I can only do barbell squats or db squats. You should try db squats the weight my not be near the same but its better than nothing imo

Pain in the training section

Dude, it you did what I've asked for a 84938598359894 times we would have that science section and you could easily find my bio mechanic analasis of the smith squat vs regular squat.

Now a sad story

This weekend I'm moving out of my parents house and today I went for the university gym card there. So far, so good. Signed up and the whole thing, have to wait 5 days before I can do some stupid test, but I'll survive that.

Then I walked to the gym to check it out.

I was like, how many of these rooms do we have? Then it struck me, the answer was one. And it was so damn small, if I got any bigger, I wouldn't even fit in it. Then it struck me, I wouldn't get any bigger there, they don't even have a fucking squat rack! I wanted to check out the heaviets dunbells, but I couldn't read the numbers on them, the dunbells where so small the number on them we're unreadable.

So I went back to the front desk and asked, why I needed to do a test if the cardio machines where the most dangerous stuff around.

Being a poor student and all I can't afford gym. ( Any space witout a squat rack is not a gym imo)

Thank god I still go home in the weekends, so I can still get decent workouts on friday night and sundays. Rest of the week, hacksquat I guess

If there are O bars there. I saw one on a bench. 1 O bar in the gym

Rocky, plz start an energex over there

Pain - I use the smith machine for nearly the whole of my push session (not by choice but due to lack of equipment 0 something EBERGEX will not have to worry about - Jorn, I'll be opening one up asap) and I have had no bother with it. I know some people seem to find it difficult and iut may be that you just won't get on with it. Most Muscualr mentioned about your pushing through your toes at the pushing part of the movement, if this is the case either try using a plate underneath your heels or moving your foot stance forward which will make it more of a hack squat movement. Or try front squats on the smith. Other than that, as q80 suggested, try lunges (great for upper thigh).

DB squats I find to be much less effective as it becomes more of a deadlift movement imo and it's difficult to use the sdame amount of weight comp\rfatively to stimulate the legs. you mention leg curl in there for hams - but don't forget the SLDL!

Dude my guess is that u might be going to heavy, or you are putting your feet to far infront of you, or to far behind u man. try puttin your feet slightly in front of your body, and point your toes outward, that should help take some of the strain off your knees also, try n go lighter weigh for a while and knock out like 10-12 reps per set, this will help griwth anyway bro.

your knees have some inflammation in them if they hurt so try icing them while your at the PC we both know u live their

If the knee pain persists i would suggest optimum nutritions superstrength glucosemine plus CSA tabs, its a great product in my opinion.

like i said take it light on legs for a while and really pump blood into them.

Godbless

Ben

I feel for you pain... but i think you still have options available to you for an effective leg workout. I would go with the suggestions to do the hack squats with leg extensions and add some lunges to the mix. I've tried DB lunges and they aren't the best but i guess it won't hurt to give em a try! Good luck man

JornT - I feel for you too man!

Also try Walking Barbell Lunges. If you have the room to do it at your gym. You can do them with short strides, for Quad development; or long strides for Hamstring development.

Just one more question when you squat in the smith do you end up on your toes. Some times people squat in this fashion and it places tremendous pressure on the knee joint?

On your toes is the safest positioning for your knee during a squat. Once you go past the parralel your heels coming off the ground(unless you've trained yourself around it) its your body trying to correct the bad positioning ur knee is in. Past the parallel the knee pushes out of its plane and thats why people strap their knees to stop this from happening. Technichally squats should never be done past the parallel and if you do you should have something under your heels with your knees strapped to stop the knee going out of plane.

Practice it yourself. Do a squat with no weight and watch your knees as you go past the parallel. Then do it again but on your toes watching your knees again. You'll see an obvious difference.

The smith machine is just exagerating this bad movement causing more pain because its along a fixed plain. Thats my opinion anyway.
