I have been looking at the Ed Coan article in Flex and I was stuck by it because it looks more like a combo of bodybuilding and powerlifting together. I thought about trying it out for 8 weeks but I know what's going to happen is after a few weeks I am going to go back to the bodybuilding routine because that is why I weightlift. But then I got to thinking, what if I kept the big 3 as he has them and then incorporate the rest from a bodybuilding perspective. I figure that I could gain both strength as time goes by as well as the mass/size that I workout for. Do you think that my thinking is good on that?

Haven't read the artcile, but if by the big 3 you mean bench, deads, and squat, then yeah, I think that is the basis of good BBing routines anyway - those as the mainstay and then the supplementary exercises around them!

I have begun this workout and I have run into a problem that I really have never had before. Getting a MAJOR headache on my left side. I got it after doing the 2 set of working sets on the squats. Normallly I do all the other legs workouts before squats and save them for the end becuase of the energy they take. Anyway, I told my wife now I see why Ronnie Coleman probably shakes his head lol.

Yesterday I was doing the bench. I was good til I got to incline bench. I felt a little of it in the 2 set of of it and on the 3rd set it got worse. Not as bad as when I did squats but probably half as bad. I took 2 aleve pills and it took 1 hours for the pain to go away. What I am wondering is am I doing too much? I think on the squats, working set I was a little too heavy. I also hope that this isnt leading to something more dangerous in the future, the headache thing.

My legs have been sore though!!

Well that could be a lot of things. First thing I would say is to go to a chiropractic. I had a similiar problem about 2 years ago and my chiropractic told me my neck was out of place. its nothing serious, he just cracked it and i felt fine and the headache went away. also get your back cracked. but, if that doesn't work then go to the doctor, it could be blood pressure...

I had thought about the chiropractor. I went to one last May for 2 months.Really helped me alot but it cost me about $1000. The one you went to , did he take x rays?

If the headache pounding continues I probably will either see a chiropractor or go see a doctor.

That Ed Coan routine is really good. I did something similar for 4-5 months a little over a year ago and my lifts went through the roof. IT was in flex also, the brute strength program... don't know if you happened to come across it. This program is similar. Strength and mass go hand in hand so you got nothing to worry about. I added about 15 pounds in that time and increased my deads and squat by about 100 pounds and my bench by about 50. Furthermore when you go back to the traditional bodybuilding routine after this with the 8-12 rep range you will be stronger in every exercise allowing you to add more mass. I personally like to do this in my own training, alternating between low rep strength phases and then higher rap mass phases
