This is a really complicated matter you are getting into. The best advice is to look it up on either other sites or training methods on here that have already been posted.

As for the amount of sets, it depends how many excercises you are doing, how many reps for each set, which excercises, and more. It is different for every person, so learn what works best for you.

Instead of asking the question in the way that you did, maybe post a workout and let others critique it for you...it's probably more worthwhile.

For me, I train with weights 3x a week. It works for me.

Assess your physique, look at your current routine and if you feel your arms need prioritizing then you can do arms on your own day. However, understand that triceps are involved in chest and shoulder work and biceps are involved in back work so make sure if you do decide your arms need their own day, you're not training them too close to these bodyparts.

Personally, I've trained them both with other bodyparts and on their own day so my recommendation is try both and decide which program works best for you. I like to go with the old adage that there are so many different training techniques, I'd be iggnorant to not try as many things as possible to find what works best.

If your arms are a weak point, try training them on their own day to see if that brings them up. Also, I like the idea of starting with Triceps because I feel if I get too much of a pump in my Biceps first, it affects my range of motion during tricep exercises. Remember though, if you want to bring up your arms specifically (and the rest of your body is well developed) you can plan your workout around your arms for a couple months, but always make sure the rest of your routine fits well together.

i do biceps and triceps on there own day and shoulders, back and chest the same way. every muscle group gets its own day.

1. biceps
2. chest
3. off
4. triceps
5. back
6. shoulders
7. legs

sometimes i will take a day off after legs every once in a while when i feel burned out. i myself though cant stand to miss a day in the gym.

dude , I used to train my whole amr in one day then the next day to chest and legs but I was getting way too tired. So I started doing biceps and back one day, triceps and chest the next, then legs the third day that way I'm not add fatigued half way through my workout

That's basically the way I train.

Biceps, Back and Forearms
Chest, Triceps and Shoulders
Legs and Abs

At the moment I'm using a routine I found in Flex (Australian Edition Nov/Dec 2005). I do my legs every 4 days and every thing else every 3 days.
According to this article it gives you the optimum recovery time between workouts. I've been doing it since the start of the year and I've been happy with it.
