I don't think it actually worked for Arnold at actually expanding his rib cage, I'm not saying it doesn't have any benefits but expanding or stretching bone isn't one of them. We've learned a lot about training since the 70's especially in the fields of biomechanics and exercise physiology.

Of course some people are different, but there is no major differences that will allow an adult to expand bone due to an exercise, its a total myth.

well i don't know about expanding your rib cage, but i do them and it does help with the serratus and since i do them on chest day it gives a good stretch on the upper body!

It benefits the back and chest muscles as at different stages of the movement the tension is on the antagonistic muscles of back and chest.

I did them religiouly in the early days.
chest expansion ...... nope.
But as MexicanMuscle said it will build your serratus and intercostals slowly.
This is one exercise to go light on.
Basically concentrate on using rib cage expansion & contraction (using serratus and intercostals) to pull the bar over.
If you feel elbow pain loosen off the straight arms a little.
The most immediate benefit is in re-oxygenating your lungs.

Most of the pro's have developed serratus but intercostal develoment seems few and far apart. I find that surprising at such low bodyfat levels.

I was thinking about trying it. Haven't really done them consistently before. I think it might be similar to a stretching program. If you stretch consistently and to a point of tension, then your range of motion will increase and the flexibility gains will become more permanent. If your rib cage stretches out due to the stretching of ligaments and tendons, then possibly it will hold the new position after an extended period of these stretches. I don't really know though.

I plan on incorporating it into my workouts soon. I guess I'll find out how it goes.

I believe that the arrangement of the serratus muscles will not allow this movement to be of any benefit to this particular muscle group.

It can help in the development of chest and back muscle as Rocky said. Hand placement and form is key. The style of leaning over a bench is not as effective as using a cable while standing IMO.

As for it increasing your overall girth - bull****...
