Well you see, the other day I was doing some heavy deadlifts (heavy for me anyway) as part of my overall back workout, topping out my last set with 6x 45Lb plates total.
I was able to do 4 reps with great form as I was trying to see if I could do that weight or not.
Normally I don't go for how much I can lift but I have been curious about my deadlift abilities for a while.
Anyway....
Today my lower back is killing me. Not my spine......just the muscle. My Errectors.....is that correct??
I have been laying on a heating pad for most of the day.
Anybody have any suggestions on how I can get this pain to go away faster.
Yes I know, I am on creating and glutamine etc...............
Just really need to know if I should be going hot then cold or just hot or just cold or what would help with recovery the fastest.

Please help me out.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Sorry to here bro, know the feeling, at the start of this year I was hospitalised for 1 week with severe back pain.

All I can recommend for your situation is warm bath and stretch as much as possible (hamstrings as well.

you could try hot pack 15 minutes on 15 minutes off.

But for the most part if you are "certain" it is just muscular stretch, stretch and stretch. Plenty of protein and shit loads of water.

p.s. yes you are correct "erector spinae" i believe.

I think you're lucky it's just muscular...I had to see physio for 4 months coz I put out my lower back earlier this year while doing deadlifts. It's been 8 months since, but my back's still not right

I've taken the last month of due to back problems, but have been struggling with them on and off for 10 years. Anyways, immediatly after the injury you should ice, then in the days following alternate heat and ice and as the injury heals heat only. You should definetly see a masage therapist which will help speed the recovery and help with proper recovery. The sooner the better, as scar tissue starts to form, the muscle tightens and often fibers stick together. Massage can help all this.

I do deadlifts with nearly every back workout but like you said I just don't push myself to that extreame very often. I like to stay in the 8 - 12 rep range.

Thanks everybody for the help.

If you are positive if it muscular and not the spine, then you need to stretch. Do a lot of hamstring, and hip stretches. also, when you are watching tv or w/e, sit down w/ proper form to keep stress off the lower back. and if you decide to lay down, bring your feet up (knees bent, feet fully on floor) and that will take stress off your lower back. and I would obviously lay off the heavy deadlifts for a while. do some hypers and SLDL and ease your way into heavy deads next time. I think a big mistake people make is going too heavy too quick. you have to ease into it. instead of just jumping from 8 to 4 reps, next time go 8 to 6 to 5 then to 4.

Must Stretch, for reasons pointed out previous replies. Sorry Rob all respect and congrats on becoming a doctor.
But that is different then being a qualified Physio, hydrotherapist or sports injury doctor who deal with this type of injury everyday. Doctors handle more with treating the cold, flew...etc
If you can deal with it, without anti-inflamitories, do so.
Take JDF's advice on heat and cool theoropy instead of useing the anti's if possible.

Good luck.

PS don't ever stop stretching...........ever.

No problemo. When you type in all caps, it makes it seem like you're yelling.
